Issues of Social Responsibility on the Web

            These days the amount of time spent online has been increasing ever since the 1980’s and with more time being on the computer, it also comes with social responsibility. Teenagers have grown increasingly dependent on using the internet and technology to pass the time. This is not a great thing as being on the internet distracts your mind more and makes you less focus on your goals. Teens need to make sure that they are spending enough time off the internet to make sure that your grades are good and you still interact with family more. Students have shorter mind spans now so it’s up to them to make sure that they can focus enough to do well at school. There needs to be a responsibility that you won’t meet or speak with people you don’t know online which could result bad things happening to you.

            For adults, there needs to be a social responsibility on the internet that they won’t do place anything out there that could potentially corrupt a teenager. But the internet has been doing some good for the online community if you make the right choices and remember your responsibilities. There are times when you know you have things to be done and you should do them instead of using the computer to waste time. The internet can provide you with all of the information for school that you need which is better for students in terms of time, but they need to be responsible so they will not cheat or copy. You can talk with your friends online and with technology which makes it much more convenient for people but make sure that you don’t speak with people you don’t know. Teenagers can use the internet to express themselves and have a release from the real world which is fine because reality can be too overwhelming, but to make sure that what you do on the internet won’t hurt you in the future.

•        90% of teens are on the computer and internet now.
•       Kids have been spending too much time online that makes it seem a bit dangerous like online relationships.
•      The younger generation has started using the internet for escape, to show who they really are on the internet.
•        Now the internet is used for everything like chatting and looking for information.
•        The older generation has trouble with the new technology.
•        At schools when they are teaching, they installed more computers and LED projectors.
•        The attention span of teens has shortened since they are use to having things done fast and quick.
•        Social Networking is where teenagers interact with their friends and post pictures of their selves.
•       Cyber bullying and fighting on the internet has increased since people aren’t face to face with someone so it gives them confidence to bash them.
•       Teenagers are now more comfortable with having their information exposed more than the older generations.
•       Internet Crimes and predators have grown as the internet grows as well.
•       Most teenagers are aware when there are predators online that tries to contact them.
•       The concern is more about the teenagers become more participates than victims.
•      On the internet there are problems that get worse like thoughts of suicide and being anorexic since they can communicate with other people to talk about these problems.
•      Parents grow increasingly less aware of what is happening in their child’s life as they spend more time on the computer.

Dear Eventbrite and staff,

              Hello! This is Angela Moy from Oakland Technical High School. We came to visit the Eventbrite Company on Friday November 9, 2012. I just wanted to personally thank you all for letting us come in and visit your company. The staff took some time off to talk to us about their jobs and I really appreciate it. I got to learn some personally knowledge about how the people at Eventbrite feel about working there and what they do. I also want to thank the staff for talking to us during their lunch break about their jobs or just to interact with us. The warm atmosphere really made me feel at home and the free leftover sushi was just amazing. If there was another chance to go back and visit Eventbrite, I will definitely take that offer and come back again.

Digital Nations

          In this movie Digital Nations, it talks about computers and how it’s affecting the generation and lives today. Parents have been speculating that their kids and more people have become immersed in the digital world as a way of life. There are some people who just can’t imagine their lived without their computers or phones, when only about 10-20 years ago all this technology was mostly for business and the wealthy people. Douglas Rushkoff who once thought that the internet and change would be good for the future generation has doubts about it now. Studies have shown from NASA that people that think they are quick at multitasking are actually slower in everything then the average person.

           In University of Massachusetts,  In South Korea, computer and gaming has become a huge part of the younger generation and continues its popularity. Kids that are in second grade are already taught how to use a computer and understand the functions of it. It has become an increasing problem in Korea, because there has been kids that have died from playing tournaments without food and drinks. This problem has also caused a decrease in the learning ability of students not just in South Korea, but around the world. It distracts the students from solely focusing on their studies and cause them to do bad at school.

The Candy Bar Activity

To do this activity, we used a paper in replace of a candy bar. The objective of the task was to be able to break the candy into 12 equal pieces. In our group, which consists of Ruby and Alina, we decided that 4 breaks were enough to split the piece of candy bar into 12 equal pieces. We decided that each break just meant when we actually broke the candy, not by how many paper there was. We think that it wouldn't count if we were splitting them up in a pile all at once. That would take too much time and so we broke it half first and then broke it into 6 pieces. On out last break we broke it in half one more time with the papers piled together and made 12 equal pieces.

Eventbrite is a website where event organizers can set up their ticket sales, plan the event that they want to do, and promote it through different social networking websites. It makes it easier for organizers to set up their events and spread the word faster and better over the internet.

It is a for-profit company, not-for-profit organization, or a government agency?

 Eventbrite is a for-profit company, because they are a entrepreneur company that a few people started up in 2006. The company generates revenue by charging organizers a fee of 2.5% of the ticket price plus $0.99 cents per ticket sold, but doesn’t charge any fees for free events. They planned to sell over $400 million in tickets during 2011.

 Who are the customers/clients of this organization?

 The customers in Eventbrite are basically the event organizers that is planning or hosting an event. Whether it’s for a concert or a fundraiser, Eventbrite helps them out when the tickets sales and promoting the event so that it can get spread around and more people can find out about it. This also makes it easier for ticket-buyers to buy tickets since they make the ticket buying process easier for them.

 Eventbrite has been in business since 2006 which is 6 years as of now. The headquarters where it was founded is in San Francisco, California.

 What are some of the jobs at this organization?

 Most of their jobs at Eventbrite have to do with event planning, managers in products, marketing and much more. Some of these jobs are Payroll Manager, Director of Customer Experience, Director of Product Management, Head of Growth, and User Acquisition Analytic Engineer.

 How large or small is this organization?

 (# Employees, # people served/year,etc)? In Eventbrite there are over 170 employees working there. They have served thousands of people since they started Eventbrite back in 2006.

How does the organization incorporate new and emerging technology?

 Eventbrite developed two applications targeted towards event organizers. There is “Easy Entry” which allows organizers of live events to see the number of tickets sold to a particular event and the number in attendance. It offers several ways to check in attendees: scrolling through a list of registered attendees, searching by name and by scanning the barcode of the attendee’s ticket. The mobile app also links back to the user’s page on Eventbrite providing post-event details and an attendee summary report for the organizers. “At the Door” allows the user to check-in attendees, as well as purchase tickets and process credit cards on-site.

Computer Communication

Before there was a time when computer- based stuff wasn’t used too much before besides calculating equations and just simple computing. But now, this is the era where computer-based is used almost all the time for many different type of things like getting news and information on different types of topics. Computer-based commutation mechanism has been used and increasing used through the internet and to conversate with other people that aren’t necessarily nearby you. It has become something that we feel that we really need because we’ve relied on it so much that we find it difficult to communicate without it. It’s easier to use and more efficient with technology for communicating with other people.

These days, many people, both young and old, uses internet-based communication for ways to communicate quickly. There are so many different ways that you can communicate through the internet for example email. Email has been here for a while now and this is one of the ways people use to communicate with each other. There is also the social media networks that have become so popular with everyone, that it could have a big impact on a situation. There are things like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Myspace that many people use to talk to other people faster and to post about things they like or just their daily life.

Though internet-based communication is used often, there is also telephone-based communication which is basically a different type of computer that people use. Cell phones have become something that people are so dependent on because we have just gotten so use to using it. With the cell phone, you are allowed to call people or text them as a way to communicate with others faster as long as you have signal. Having landlines are just as important, because even though cell phones are wireless and easier to use, having a home phone, you will always have good clear signal to talk with others. So even talking in rural areas would be easier for the landlines to call then cellphones that is dependent on the signal they have.

With computer-based communications you are able to access the news much faster than before if you are waiting for the newspapers. Having computers and TVs, you can access your news much faster. With the TV there are news that broadcast live or even when there is breaking news you are able to know the news and other information quicker. On the computer, you are able to go to different news websites to keep up with the latest news that you want to know about. And you can know about different types of news from all around the world a lot faster as well. Sometimes needing to know the news faster is important for many people so using the computer-based communication has become a need for people that want faster news and information.
